19 I am not anyone's slave. But I have become a slave to everyone, so I can win as many people as possible. 20 When I am with the Jews, I live like a Jew to win Jews. They are ruled by the Law of Moses, and I am not. But I live by the Law to win them. 21 And when I am with people who are not ruled by the Law, I forget about the Law to win them. Of course, I never really forget about the law of God. In fact, I am ruled by the law of Christ. 22 When I am with people whose faith is weak, I live as they do to win them. I do everything I can to win everyone I possibly can. 23 I do all this for the good news, because I want to share in its blessings.

A Race and a Fight

24 (A) You know that many runners enter a race, and only one of them wins the prize. So run to win! 25 (B) Athletes work hard to win a crown that cannot last, but we do it for a crown that will last forever. 26 I don't run without a goal. And I don't box by beating my fists in the air. 27 I keep my body under control and make it my slave, so I won't lose out after telling the good news to others.

Don't Worship Idols

10 (C) Friends, I want to remind you that all our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. (D) All of them also ate the same spiritual food (E) and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ. (F) But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.

What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. (G) They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols. (H) Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about 23,000 died. Don't do shameful things as they did. (I) And don't try to test Christ,[a] as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. 10 (J) Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel. 11 These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.

12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall. 13 (K) You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.

Paul’s Use of His Freedom

19 Though I am free(A) and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone,(B) to win as many as possible.(C) 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.(D) To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law),(E) so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law(F) (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law),(G) so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.(H) I have become all things to all people(I) so that by all possible means I might save some.(J) 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

The Need for Self-Discipline

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?(K) Run(L) in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown(M) that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.(N) 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;(O) I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.(P) 27 No, I strike a blow to my body(Q) and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.(R)

Warnings From Israel’s History

10 For I do not want you to be ignorant(S) of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud(T) and that they all passed through the sea.(U) They were all baptized into(V) Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food(W) and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(X) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(Y)

Now these things occurred as examples(Z) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters,(AA) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](AB) We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(AC) We should not test Christ,[b](AD) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(AE) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(AF)—and were killed(AG) by the destroying angel.(AH)

11 These things happened to them as examples(AI) and were written down as warnings for us,(AJ) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(AK) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(AL) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(AM) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(AN) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
