“When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, (A)‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, (B)‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ” 10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just (C)as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it (D)became a serpent.

11 But Pharaoh also (E)called the wise men and (F)the [a]sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also (G)did in like manner with their [b]enchantments. 12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. 13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

The First Plague: Waters Become Blood

14 So the Lord said to Moses: (H)“Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning, when he goes out to the (I)water, and you shall stand by the river’s bank to meet him; and (J)the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand. 16 And you shall say to him, (K)‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, (L)that they may [c]serve Me in the wilderness”; but indeed, until now you would not hear! 17 Thus says the Lord: “By this (M)you shall know that I am the Lord. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and (N)they shall be turned (O)to blood. 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, the river shall stink, and the Egyptians will (P)loathe[d] to drink the water of the river.” ’ ”

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and (Q)stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone.’ ” 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded. So he (R)lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the (S)waters that were in the river were turned to blood. 21 The fish that were in the river died, the river stank, and the Egyptians (T)could not drink the water of the river. So there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 (U)Then the magicians of Egypt did (V)so with their [e]enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, (W)as the Lord had said.

“When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘[a](A)Work a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘(B)Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, so that it may turn into a serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and so they did, just as the Lord had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and [b]his servants, and it (C)turned into a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh also (D)called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they too, the (E)soothsayer priests of Egypt, did the same with (F)their secret arts. 12 For each one threw down his staff, and they turned into serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs. 13 Yet (G)Pharaoh’s heart was [c]hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Water Turned into Blood

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is [d]stubborn; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning [e]just as (H)he is going out to the water, and position yourself to meet him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand (I)the staff that was turned into a serpent. 16 And (J)you shall say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “(K)Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened up to now.” 17 This is what the Lord says: “(L)By this you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, I am going to strike [f]the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and (M)it will be turned into blood. 18 Then (N)the fish that are in the Nile will die, the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will [g](O)no longer be able to drink water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and (P)extend your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their [h]streams, over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, so that they may become blood; and there will be blood through all the land of Egypt, both in containers of wood and in containers of stone.’”

20 So Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded. And he lifted up [i](Q)the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants; and (R)all the water that was in the Nile was turned into blood. 21 Then the fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt. 22 (S)But the soothsayer priests of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was [j]hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

“When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Work a miracle [to prove your authority],’ then you say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, so that it may become a serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and did just as the Lord had commanded; Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh called for the wise men [skilled in magic and omens] and the sorcerers [skilled in witchcraft], and they also, these magicians (soothsayer-priests) of Egypt, did the same with their secret arts and enchantments. 12 For every [a]man threw down his staff and they turned into serpents; but Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Water Is Turned to Blood

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he is going out to the water, and wait for him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand the staff that was turned into a serpent. 16 You shall say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened until now.” 17 Thus says the Lord, “By this you shall know and recognize and acknowledge that I am the Lord: look, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water in the Nile, and it shall be turned to blood. 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the Nile will become foul, and the Egyptians will not be able to drink water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, so that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, in containers both of wood and of stone.’”

20 So Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded; Aaron lifted up the staff and struck the waters in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile was turned into blood. 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river became foul smelling, and the Egyptians could not drink its water, and there was blood throughout [b]all the land of Egypt. 22 But the magicians of Egypt did the [c]same by their secret arts and enchantments; so Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

  3. Exodus 7:22 Perhaps the priests were able to change a small quantity of the blood back into water or vice-versa. That would explain why Pharaoh took the problem so lightly (v 23).

“When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,(A)’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”(B)

10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers,(C) and the Egyptian magicians(D) also did the same things by their secret arts:(E) 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart(F) became hard and he would not listen(G) to them, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Blood

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;(H) he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river.(I) Confront him on the bank of the Nile,(J) and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship(K) me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.(L) 17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord:(M) With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.(N) 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink;(O) the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’”(P)

19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff(Q) and stretch out your hand(R) over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.”

20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded.(S) He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile,(T) and all the water was changed into blood.(U) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.

22 But the Egyptian magicians(V) did the same things by their secret arts,(W) and Pharaoh’s heart(X) became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

10 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the Lord had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
