Jeremiah’s Lifestyle and Message

16 The word of the Lord also came to me, saying, ²“You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.” ³For thus says the Lord concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them and their fathers who begot them in this land: ⁴“They shall die ^(A)gruesome deaths; they shall not be ^(B)lamented nor shall they be ^(C)buried, but they shall be ^(D)like refuse on the face of the earth. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their ^(E)corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth.”

⁵For thus says the Lord: ^(F)“Do not enter the house of mourning, nor go to lament or bemoan them; for I have taken away My peace from this people,” says the Lord, “lovingkindness and mercies. ⁶Both the great and the small shall die in this land. They shall not be buried; ^(G)neither shall men lament for them, ^(H)cut themselves, nor ^(I)make themselves bald for them. ⁷Nor shall men break bread in mourning for them, to comfort them for the dead; nor shall men give them the cup of consolation to ^(J)drink for their father or their mother. ⁸Also you shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink.”

⁹For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, ^(K)I will cause to cease from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of ^[a]mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

¹⁰“And it shall be, when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, ^(L)‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’ ¹¹then you shall say to them, ^(M)‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ says the Lord; ‘they have walked after other gods and have served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken Me and not kept My law. ¹²And you have done ^(N)worse than your fathers, for behold, ^(O)each one ^[b]follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me. ¹³^(P)Therefore I will cast you out of this land ^(Q)into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.’

God Will Restore Israel^(R)

¹⁴“Therefore behold, the ^(S)days are coming,” says the Lord, “that it shall no more be said, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’ ¹⁵but, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the ^(T)north and from all the lands where He had driven them.’ For ^(U)I will bring them back into their land which I gave to their fathers.

¹⁶“Behold, I will send for many ^(V)fishermen,” says the Lord, “and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. ¹⁷For My ^(W)eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity hidden from My eyes. ¹⁸And first I will repay ^(X)double for their iniquity and their sin, because ^(Y)they have defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable idols.”

¹⁹O Lord, ^(Z)my strength and my fortress,
^(AA)My refuge in the day of affliction,
The Gentiles shall come to You
From the ends of the earth and say,
“Surely our fathers have inherited lies,
Worthlessness and ^(AB)unprofitable things.”
²⁰Will a man make gods for himself,
^(AC)Which are not gods?

²¹“Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know,
I will cause them to know
My hand and My might;
And they shall know that ^(AD)My name is the Lord.

Judah’s Sin and Punishment

17 “The sin of Judah is ^(AE)written with a ^(AF)pen of iron;
With the point of a diamond it is ^(AG)engraved
On the tablet of their heart,
And on the horns of your altars,
²While their children remember
Their altars and their ^(AH)wooden^[c] images
By the green trees on the high hills.
³O My mountain in the field,
I will give as plunder your wealth, all your treasures,
And your high places of sin within all your borders.
⁴And you, even yourself,
Shall let go of your heritage which I gave you;
And I will cause you to serve your enemies
In ^(AI)the land which you do not know;
For ^(AJ)you have kindled a fire in My anger which shall burn forever.”

⁵Thus says the Lord:

^(AK)“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
And makes ^(AL)flesh his ^[d]strength,
Whose heart departs from the Lord.
⁶For he shall be ^(AM)like a shrub in the desert,
And ^(AN)shall not see when good comes,
But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness,
^(AO)In a salt land which is not inhabited.

⁷“Blessed^(AP) is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
⁸For he shall be ^(AQ)like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not ^[e]fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

⁹“The ^(AR)heart is deceitful above all things,
And ^[f]desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
¹⁰I, the Lord, ^(AS)search the heart,
I test the ^[g]mind,
^(AT)Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

¹¹“As a partridge that ^[h]broods but does not hatch,
So is he who gets riches, but not by right;
It ^(AU)will leave him in the midst of his days,
And at his end he will be ^(AV)a fool.”

¹²A glorious high throne from the beginning
Is the place of our sanctuary.
¹³O Lord, ^(AW)the hope of Israel,
^(AX)All who forsake You shall be ashamed.

“Those who depart from Me
Shall be ^(AY)written in the earth,
Because they have forsaken the Lord,
The ^(AZ)fountain of living waters.”

Jeremiah Prays for Deliverance

¹⁴Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;
Save me, and I shall be saved,
For ^(BA)You are my praise.
¹⁵Indeed they say to me,
^(BB)“Where is the word of the Lord?
Let it come now!”
¹⁶As for me, ^(BC)I have not hurried away from being a shepherd who follows You,
Nor have I desired the woeful day;
You know what came out of my lips;
It was right there before You.
¹⁷Do not be a terror to me;
^(BD)You are my hope in the day of doom.
¹⁸^(BE)Let them be ashamed who persecute me,
But ^(BF)do not let me be put to shame;
Let them be dismayed,
But do not let me be dismayed.
Bring on them the day of doom,
And ^(BG)destroy^[i] them with double destruction!

Hallow the Sabbath Day

¹⁹Thus the Lord said to me: “Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Judah come in and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; ²⁰and say to them, ^(BH)‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. ²¹Thus says the Lord: ^(BI)“Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; ²²nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day, as I ^(BJ)commanded your fathers. ²³^(BK)But they did not obey nor incline their ear, but ^[j]made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor receive instruction.

²⁴“And it shall be, ^(BL)if you heed Me carefully,” says the Lord, “to bring no burden through the gates of this city on the ^(BM)Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it, ²⁵^(BN)then shall enter the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, accompanied by the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall remain forever. ²⁶And they shall come from the cities of Judah and from ^(BO)the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from ^(BP)the ^[k]lowland, from the mountains and from ^(BQ)the ^[l]South, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, bringing ^(BR)sacrifices of praise to the house of the Lord.

²⁷“But if you will not heed Me to hallow the Sabbath day, such as not carrying a burden when entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then ^(BS)I will kindle a fire in its gates, ^(BT)and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be ^(BU)quenched.” ’ ”

A Song of Praise to God Coming in Judgment^(A)

96 Oh, ^(B)sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
²Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
³Declare His glory among the ^[a]nations,
His wonders among all peoples.

⁴For ^(C)the Lord is great and ^(D)greatly to be praised;
^(E)He is to be feared above all gods.
⁵For ^(F)all the gods of the peoples are idols,
^(G)But the Lord made the heavens.
⁶Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and ^(H)beauty are in His sanctuary.

⁷^(I)Give^[b] to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
⁸^[c]Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.

¹¹^(M)Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;

¹²Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice
¹³ before the Lord.
For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
^(O)He shall judge the world with righteousness,
And the peoples with His truth.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you ^(A)should not be made to stumble. ²^(B)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming ^(C)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. ³And ^(D)these things they will do ^[a]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. ⁴But these things I have told you, that when ^[b]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

⁵“But now I ^(E)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ ⁶But because I have said these things to you, ^(F)sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but ^(G)if I depart, I will send Him to you. ⁸And when He has ^(H)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: ⁹^(I)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; ¹⁰^(J)of righteousness, ^(K)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; ¹¹^(L)of judgment, because ^(M)the ruler of this world is judged.

¹²“I still have many things to say to you, ^(N)but you cannot bear them now. ¹³However, when He, ^(O)the Spirit of truth, has come, ^(P)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. ¹⁴^(Q)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵^(R)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He ^[c]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

¹⁶“A ^(S)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, ^(T)because I go to the Father.”

¹⁷Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” ¹⁸They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not ^[d]know what He is saying.”

¹⁹Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? ²⁰Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and ^(U)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into ^(V)joy. ²¹^(W)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and ^(X)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

²³“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. ^(Y)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, ^(Z)that your joy may be ^(AA)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

²⁵“These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you ^(AB)plainly about the Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; ²⁷^(AC)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and ^(AD)have believed that I came forth from God. ²⁸^(AE)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! ³⁰Now we are sure that ^(AF)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this ^(AG)we believe that You came forth from God.”

³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³²^(AH)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, ^(AI)each to his ^[e]own, and will leave Me alone. And ^(AJ)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. ³³These things I have spoken to you, that ^(AK)in Me you may have peace. ^(AL)In the world you ^[f]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, ^(AM)I have overcome the world.”
