The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus
9 One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10 As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him[a] like a dove. 11 And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
12 The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, 13 where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
14 Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News.[b] 15 “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
The First Disciples
16 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon[c] and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 17 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 18 And they left their nets at once and followed him.
19 A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. 20 He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.
Jesus Casts Out an Evil Spirit
21 Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious law.
23 Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil[d] spirit cried out, 24 “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. 26 At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.
27 Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” 28 The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many People
29 After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home.

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth(C) in Galilee and was baptized by John(D) in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.(E) 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(F) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(G)
12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days,(H) being tempted[a] by Satan.(I) He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Jesus Announces the Good News(J)
14 After John(K) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,(L) proclaiming the good news of God.(M) 15 “The time has come,”(N) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe(O) the good news!”(P)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.(Q)
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(R)
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.(S) 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.(T) 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us,(U) Jesus of Nazareth?(V) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”(W)
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”(X) 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.(Y)
27 The people were all so amazed(Z) that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region(AA) of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many(AB)(AC)
29 As soon as they left the synagogue,(AD) they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
