The Meaning of Discipleship

²⁴ “^(A)A ^[a]disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. ²⁵ It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. ^(B)If they have called the head of the house ^[b](C)Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!

⁴⁵ “^(A)Who then is the ^(B)faithful and ^(C)sensible slave whom his ^[a]master ^(D)put in charge of his household slaves, to give them their food at the proper time? ⁴⁶ Blessed is that slave whom his ^[b]master finds so doing when he comes. ⁴⁷ Truly I say to you that ^(E)he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

⁴⁷ And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accordance with his will, will ^(A)receive many blows,

^13 (A)No ^[a]servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^[b](B)wealth.”

¹³ You call Me ^(A)‘Teacher’ and ^(B)‘Lord’; and ^[a]you are correct, for so I am. ¹⁴ So if I, ^(C)the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ For I gave you ^(D)an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly I say to you, ^(E)a slave is not greater than his master, nor is ^(F)[b]one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘^(A)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, ^(B)they will persecute you as well; if they ^(C)followed My word, they will follow yours also.
