51 The total number of Israelite men listed was 601,730.

52 (A) The Lord said to Moses, 53 “Divide the land of Canaan among these tribes, according to the number of people in each one, 54 so the larger tribes have more land than the smaller ones. 55-56 I will show you[a] what land to give each tribe, and they will receive as much land as they need, according to the number of people in it.”

57 The tribe of Levi included the clans of the Gershonites, Kohathites, Merarites, 58 as well as the clans of Libni, Hebron, Mahli, Mushi, and Korah. Kohath the Levite was the father of Amram, 59 the husband of Levi's daughter Jochebed, who was born in Egypt. Amram and Jochebed's three children were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. 60 (B) Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 (C) But Nadab and Abihu had died when they offered fire that was unacceptable to the Lord.[b]

62 In the tribe of Levi there were 23,000 men and boys at least a month old. They were not listed with the other tribes, because they would not receive any land in Canaan.

63 Moses and Eleazar counted the Israelites while they were camped in the hills of Moab across the Jordan River from Jericho. 64 None of the people that Moses and Aaron had counted in the Sinai Desert were still alive, 65 (D) except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. The Lord had said that everyone else would die there in the desert.[c]

The Daughters of Zelophehad Are Given Land

27 Zelophehad[d] was from the Manasseh tribe, and he had five daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

One day his daughters went to the sacred tent, where they met with Moses, Eleazar, and some other leaders of Israel, as well as a large crowd of Israelites. The young women said:

You know that our father died in the desert. But it was for something he did wrong, not for joining with Korah in rebelling against the Lord.

Our father left no sons to carry on his family name. But why should his name die out for that reason? Give us some land like the rest of his relatives in our clan, so our father's name can live on.

Moses asked the Lord what should be done, and the Lord answered:

(E) Zelophehad's daughters are right. They should each be given part of the land their father would have received.

Tell the Israelites that when a man dies without a son, his daughter will inherit his land. If he has no daughter, his brothers will inherit the land. 10 But if he has no brothers, his father's brothers will inherit the land. 11 And if his father has no brothers, the land must be given to his nearest relative in the clan. This is my law, and the Israelites must obey it.

Joshua Is Appointed Israel's Leader

(Deuteronomy 31.1-8)

12 (F) The Lord said to Moses, “One day you will go up into the Abarim Mountains, and from there you will see the land I am giving the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you will die,[e] just like your brother Aaron, 14 because both of you disobeyed me at Meribah near the town of Kadesh in the Zin Desert. When the Israelites insulted me there, you didn't believe in my holy power.”[f]

15 Moses replied, 16 “You are the Lord God, and you know what is in everyone's heart. So I ask you to appoint a leader for Israel. 17 (G) Your people need someone to lead them into battle, or else they will be like sheep wandering around without a shepherd.”

18 (H) The Lord answered, “Joshua son of Nun can do the job. Place your hands on him to show that he is the one to take your place. 19 Then go with him and tell him to stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the Israelites. Appoint Joshua as their new leader 20 and tell them they must now obey him, just as they obey you. 21 (I) But Joshua must depend on Eleazar to find out from me[g] what I want him to do as he leads Israel into battle.”

22 Moses followed the Lord's instructions and took Joshua to Eleazar and the people, 23 (J) then he placed his hands on Joshua and appointed him Israel's leader.

Regular Daily Sacrifices

(Exodus 29.38-43; Leviticus 6.8-13)

28 The Lord told Moses to say to the people of Israel:

Offer sacrifices to me at the appointed times of worship, so that I will smell the smoke and be pleased.

Each day offer two rams a year old as sacrifices to please me.[h] The animals must have nothing wrong with them; one will be sacrificed in the morning, and the other in the evening. Along with each of them, one kilogram of your finest flour mixed with a liter of olive oil must be offered as a grain sacrifice. This sacrifice to please me was first offered at Mount Sinai. Finally, along with each of these two sacrifices, a liter of wine must be poured on the altar as a drink offering. The second ram will be sacrificed that evening, along with the other offerings, just like the one sacrificed that morning. The smell of the smoke from these sacrifices will please me.

The Sacrifice on the Sabbath

The Lord said:

9-10 On the Sabbath, in addition to the regular daily sacrifices,[i] you must sacrifice two rams a year old to please me.[j] These rams must have nothing wrong with them, and they will be sacrificed with a drink offering and two kilograms of your finest flour mixed with olive oil.

The Sacrifices on the First Day of the Month

The Lord said:

11 On the first day of each month, bring to the altar two bulls, one full-grown ram, and seven rams a year old that have nothing wrong with them. Then offer these as sacrifices to please me.[k] 12 Three kilograms of your finest flour mixed with olive oil must be offered with each bull as a grain sacrifice. Two kilograms of flour mixed with oil must be offered with the ram, 13 and one kilogram of flour mixed with oil must be offered with each of the young rams. The smell of the smoke from these sacrifices will please me.

14-15 Offer two liters of wine as a drink offering with each bull, one and a half liters with the ram, and one liter with each of the young rams.

Finally, you must offer a goat[l] as a sacrifice for sin.

These sacrifices are to be offered on the first day of each month, in addition to the regular daily sacrifices.[m]

51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.(A)

52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.(B) 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number(C) of those listed.(D) 55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.(E) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

57 These were the Levites(F) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;(G) 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,(H) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[a] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses(I) and their sister(J) Miriam.(K) 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(L) 61 But Nadab and Abihu(M) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)(N)

62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.(O) They were not counted(P) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance(Q) among them.(R)

63 These are the ones counted(S) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab(T) by the Jordan across from Jericho.(U) 64 Not one of them was among those counted(V) by Moses and Aaron(W) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,(X) and not one of them was left except Caleb(Y) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.(Z)

Zelophehad’s Daughters(AA)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad(AB) son of Hepher,(AC) the son of Gilead,(AD) the son of Makir,(AE) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses,(AF) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(AG) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(AH) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(AI) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(AJ) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(AK) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(AL) before the Lord,(AM) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(AN) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(AO)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(AP) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(AQ) in the Abarim Range(AR) and see the land(AS) I have given the Israelites.(AT) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(AU) as your brother Aaron(AV) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(AW) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(AX) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(AY) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(AZ) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(BA)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[b](BB) and lay your hand on him.(BC) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(BD) in their presence.(BE) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(BF) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(BG) of the Urim(BH) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(BI) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time(BJ) my food(BK) offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’(BL) Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect,(BM) as a regular burnt offering each day.(BN) Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight,(BO) together with a grain offering(BP) of a tenth of an ephah[c] of the finest flour(BQ) mixed with a quarter of a hin[d] of oil(BR) from pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering(BS) instituted at Mount Sinai(BT) as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(BU) The accompanying drink offering(BV) is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink(BW) with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary.(BX) Offer the second lamb at twilight,(BY) along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning.(BZ) This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(CA)

Sabbath Offerings

“‘On the Sabbath(CB) day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect,(CC) together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[e](CD) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.(CE) 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath,(CF) in addition to the regular burnt offering(CG) and its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings

11 “‘On the first of every month,(CH) present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls,(CI) one ram(CJ) and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect.(CK) 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering(CL) of three-tenths of an ephah[f](CM) of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths(CN) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering(CO) of a tenth(CP) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering,(CQ) a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(CR) 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering(CS) of half a hin[g] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[h]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon(CT) during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering(CU) with its drink offering, one male goat(CV) is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[i](CW)
