When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when (B)brothers dwell in unity![a]
It is like the precious (C)oil on (D)the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
    running down on (E)the collar of his robes!
It is like (F)the dew of (G)Hermon,
    which falls on (H)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (I)has commanded the blessing,
    life forevermore.

Come, Bless the Lord

A Song of (J)Ascents.

134 Come, bless the Lord, all you (K)servants of the Lord,
    who (L)stand (M)by night in the house of the Lord!
(N)Lift up your hands to (O)the holy place
    and bless the Lord!

May the Lord (P)bless you (Q)from Zion,
    he who (R)made heaven and earth!

Your Name, O Lord, Endures Forever

135 (S)Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord,
    give praise, O (T)servants of the Lord,
who (U)stand in the house of the Lord,
    in (V)the courts of the house of our God!
Praise the Lord, for (W)the Lord is good;
    sing to his name, (X)for it is pleasant![b]
For the Lord has (Y)chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his (Z)own possession.

For I know that (AA)the Lord is great,
    and that our Lord is above all gods.
(AB)Whatever the Lord pleases, he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.
(AC)He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,
    who (AD)makes lightnings for the rain
    and brings forth the wind from his (AE)storehouses.

He it was who (AF)struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both of man and of beast;
who in your midst, O Egypt,
    sent (AG)signs and wonders
    against Pharaoh and all his servants;
10 (AH)who struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings,
11 (AI)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and (AJ)Og, king of Bashan,
    and (AK)all the kingdoms of Canaan,
12 and (AL)gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.

13 (AM)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
    (AN)your renown,[c] O Lord, throughout all ages.
14 (AO)For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and (AP)have compassion on his servants.

15 (AQ)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
    they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear,
    nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them become like them,
    so do all who trust in them.

19 (AR)O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (AS)from Zion,
    he who (AT)dwells in Jerusalem!
(AU)Praise the Lord!

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

136 (AV)Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    (AW)for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to (AX)the God of gods,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to (AY)the Lord of lords,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who alone (AZ)does great wonders,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who (BA)by understanding (BB)made the heavens,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who (BC)spread out the earth (BD)above the waters,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who (BE)made the great lights,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
the sun to rule over the day,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
the moon and stars to rule over the night,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

10 to him who (BF)struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
11 and (BG)brought Israel out from among them,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
12 with (BH)a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
13 to him who (BI)divided the Red Sea in two,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
14 (BJ)and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
15 but (BK)overthrew[d] Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
16 to him who (BL)led his people through the wilderness,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

17 to him (BM)who struck down great kings,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
18 and killed mighty kings,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
22 a heritage to Israel his (BN)servant,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

23 It is he who (BO)remembered us in our low estate,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
24 and (BP)rescued us from our foes,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
25 he who (BQ)gives food to all flesh,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to (BR)the God of heaven,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

How Shall We Sing the Lord's Song?

137 By the waters of Babylon,
    there we sat down and wept,
    when we remembered Zion.
On the willows[e] there
    we hung up our lyres.
For there our captors
    required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
    “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

(BS)How shall we sing the Lord's song
    in a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
    (BT)let my right hand forget its skill!
Let my (BU)tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
    if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
    above my highest joy!

Remember, O Lord, against the (BV)Edomites
    (BW)the day of Jerusalem,
how they said, (BX)“Lay it bare, lay it bare,
    down to its foundations!”
O daughter of Babylon, (BY)doomed to be destroyed,
    blessed shall he be who (BZ)repays you
    with what you have done to us!
Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones
    and (CA)dashes them against the rock!

Give Thanks to the Lord

Of David.

138 (CB)I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
    before (CC)the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down (CD)toward your (CE)holy temple
    and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
    for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.[f]
On the day I called, you answered me;
    my strength of soul you increased.[g]

(CF)All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
    for they have heard the words of your mouth,
and they shall sing of (CG)the ways of the Lord,
    for great is the glory of the Lord.
(CH)For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
    but the haughty he knows from afar.

(CI)Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you (CJ)preserve my life;
you (CK)stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
    and your (CL)right hand delivers me.
The Lord will (CM)fulfill his purpose for me;
    (CN)your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
    Do not forsake (CO)the work of your hands.

Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, you have (CP)searched me and known me!
You (CQ)know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you (CR)discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
    behold, O Lord, (CS)you know it altogether.
You (CT)hem me in, behind and before,
    and (CU)lay your hand upon me.
(CV)Such knowledge is (CW)too wonderful for me;
    it is high; I cannot attain it.

(CX)Where shall I go from your Spirit?
    Or where (CY)shall I flee from your presence?
(CZ)If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
    (DA)If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
    and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall (DB)lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, (DC)“Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and the light about me be night,”
12 (DD)even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light with you.

13 For you (DE)formed my inward parts;
    you (DF)knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[h]
(DG)Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.
15 (DH)My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in (DI)the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your (DJ)book were written, every one of them,
    the days that were formed for me,
    when as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious to me are your (DK)thoughts, O God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 (DL)If I would count them, they are more than (DM)the sand.
    I awake, and I am still with you.

19 Oh that you would (DN)slay the wicked, O God!
    O (DO)men of blood, (DP)depart from me!
20 They (DQ)speak against you with malicious intent;
    your enemies (DR)take your name in vain.[i]
21 (DS)Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
    And do I not (DT)loathe those who (DU)rise up against you?
22 I hate them with complete hatred;
    I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    (DV)Try me and know my thoughts![j]
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and (DW)lead me in (DX)the way everlasting![k]

The Widow's Offering

21 (A)Jesus[a] looked up and saw the rich (B)putting their gifts into (C)the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two (D)small copper coins.[b] And he said, “Truly, I tell you, (E)this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her (F)poverty put in all (G)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

(H)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things that you see, (I)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, (J)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” And he said, (K)“See that you are not led astray. For (L)many will come in my name, saying, (M)‘I am he!’ and, (N)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be (O)terrified, for these things (P)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then he said to them, (Q)“Nation will rise against nation, and (R)kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great (S)earthquakes, and in various places (T)famines and pestilences. And there will be (U)terrors and great (V)signs from heaven. 12 But before all this (W)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to (X)the synagogues and (Y)prisons, and you (Z)will be brought before (AA)kings and (AB)governors for my name's sake. 13 (AC)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds (AD)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for (AE)I will give you a mouth and (AF)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or (AG)contradict. 16 You will be delivered up (AH)even by parents and brothers[c] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 (AI)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But (AJ)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your (AK)endurance you will gain your lives.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “But (AL)when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that (AM)its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are (AN)days of (AO)vengeance, to fulfill (AP)all that is written. 23 (AQ)Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and (AR)wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and (AS)be led captive among all nations, and (AT)Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, (AU)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “And (AV)there will be signs in sun and moon (AW)and stars, and on the earth (AX)distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For (AY)the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see (AZ)the Son of Man coming in a cloud (BA)with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and (BB)raise your heads, because (BC)your redemption is drawing near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see (BD)for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 (BE)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 (BF)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (BG)my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 “But watch yourselves (BH)lest (BI)your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and (BJ)cares of this life, and (BK)that day come upon you suddenly (BL)like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But (BM)stay awake at all times, (BN)praying that you may (BO)have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and (BP)to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And (BQ)every day he was teaching in the temple, but (BR)at night he went out and lodged on (BS)the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning (BT)all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

The Widow’s Offering(A)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(B) He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(C)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(D)(E)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(F) every one of them will be thrown down.”

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(G) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(H) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(I)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(J) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(K) 15 For I will give you(L) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(M) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(N) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(O) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(P)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(Q) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(R) 22 For this is the time of punishment(S) in fulfillment(T) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(U) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(V) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(W) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(X) coming in a cloud(Y) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(Z)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(AA) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(AB) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AC)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(AD) and that day will close on you suddenly(AE) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(AF) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(AG) and each evening he went out(AH) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(AI) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(AJ)
