Romans 9:11-23

New American Standard Bible

¹¹ for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that ^(A)God’s purpose according to His choice would ^[a]stand, not ^[b]because of works but ^[c]because of Him who calls, ¹² it was said to her, “^(B)The older will serve the younger.” ¹³ Just as it is written: “^(C)Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

^14 (D)What shall we say then? ^(E)There is no injustice with God, is there? ^[d](F)Far from it! ¹⁵ For He says to Moses, “^(G)I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will show compassion to whomever I show compassion.” ¹⁶ So then, it does not depend on the person who ^[e]wants it nor the one who ^[f](H)runs, but on ^(I)God who has mercy. ¹⁷ For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “^(J)For this very reason I raised you up, in order to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed ^[g]throughout the earth.” ¹⁸ So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He ^(K)hardens whom He desires.

^19 (L)You will say to me then, “^(M)Why does He still find fault? For ^(N)who has resisted His will?” ²⁰ On the contrary, who are you, ^[h](O)you foolish person, who ^(P)answers back to God? ^(Q)The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? ²¹ Or does the potter not have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one object ^[i]for honorable use, and another ^[j]for common use? ^22 [k]What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with great ^(R)patience objects of wrath ^(S)prepared for destruction? ²³ And He did so to make known ^(T)the riches of His glory upon ^(U)objects of mercy, which He ^(V)prepared beforehand for glory,
