¹⁶ but they continually ^(A)mocked the messengers of God, ^(B)despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, ^(C)until the wrath of the Lord rose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Grieving over Jerusalem

³⁷ “^(A)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who ^(B)kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, ^(C)the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

^52 (A)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of ^(B)the Righteous One, and ^(C)you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;

^15 (A)who both killed the Lord Jesus and ^(B)the prophets, and ^[a]drove us out. ^[b]They are not pleasing to God, ^[c]but hostile to all people,

³³ who by faith ^(A)conquered kingdoms, ^(B)performed acts of righteousness, ^(C)obtained promises, ^(D)shut the mouths of lions, ^34 (E)quenched the power of fire, ^(F)escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, ^(G)became mighty in war, ^(H)put foreign armies to flight. ^35 (I)Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their ^[a]release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; ³⁶ and others ^[b]experienced mocking and flogging, and further, ^(J)chains and imprisonment. ³⁷ They were ^(K)stoned, they were sawn in two, ^[c]they were tempted, they were ^(L)put to death with the sword; they went about ^(M)in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ^(N)tormented ³⁸ (people of whom the world was not worthy), ^(O)wandering in deserts, on mountains, and sheltering in caves and holes ^[d]in the ground.

³⁹ And all these, having ^(P)gained approval through their faith, ^(Q)did not receive ^[e]what was promised, ⁴⁰ because God had ^[f]provided ^(R)something better for us, so that ^(S)apart from us they would not be made perfect.

¹⁰ As an example, ^(A)brothers and sisters, of suffering and patience, take ^(B)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
