¹⁷ But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him: “You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”^(A)

⁴ But because of David, the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem.^(A)

¹⁹ The Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah because of His servant David, since He had promised to give a lamp^(A) to David and his sons forever.^(B)
