²⁶ “If anyone comes to me^(A) and does not hate^(B) his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, and even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.

²⁵ The one who loves his life will lose it,^(A) and the one who hates^(B) his life^(C) in this world will keep it for eternal life.

³² And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah,^(A) David, Samuel, and the prophets,^{(B) 33} who by faith conquered kingdoms,^(C) administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,^{(D) 34} quenched the raging of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight.^{(E) 35} Women received their dead, raised to life again. Other people were tortured, not accepting release, so that they might gain a better resurrection. ³⁶ Others experienced mockings and scourgings, as well as bonds and imprisonment.^{(F) 37} They were stoned,^[a](G) they were sawed in two, they died by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins,^(H) destitute, afflicted, and mistreated.

¹⁰ Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil^(A) is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days.^(B) Be faithful to the point of death,^(C) and I will give you the crown^[a] of life.^(D)
