Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And (A)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (B)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of (C)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (D)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (E)sought to touch him, for (F)power came out from him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And (G)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (H)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for (I)yours is the kingdom of God.

21 (J)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

(K)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when (L)people hate you and when they (M)exclude you and revile you and (N)spurn your name as evil, (O)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (P)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (Q)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 (R)“But woe to you who are rich, (S)for you (T)have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (U)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to (V)you who laugh now, (W)for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, (X)when all people speak well of you, for (Y)so their fathers did to (Z)the false prophets.

Blessings and Woes(A)

A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(B) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(C) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(D)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.(E)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(F)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(G)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you(H) and insult you(I)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.(J)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(K) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(L)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(M)
    for you have already received your comfort.(N)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(O)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.(P)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(Q)
