¹² Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.^(A)

The Two Foundations

²⁴ “Therefore,^(A) everyone who hears these words^(B) of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. ²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”

²⁸ When Jesus had finished saying these things,^(C) the crowds were astonished at his teaching,^{(D) 29} because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

¹⁷ “Why do you ask me about what is good?”^[a] he said to him. “There is only one who is good.^[b] If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”^(A)

¹⁸ “Which ones?” he asked him.

Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness;^{(B) 19} honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself.^[c](C)

²⁰ “I have kept all these,”^[d] the young man told him. “What do I still lack?”

²¹ “If you want to be perfect,”^[e] Jesus said to him, “go, sell your belongings and give to the poor,^(D) and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

³⁶ “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”

³⁷ He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.^{[a](A) 38} This is the greatest and most important^[b] command. ³⁹ The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.^{[c](B) 40} All the Law and the Prophets depend^[d] on these two commands.”^(C)

²⁰ teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,^[a] I am with you always,^[b] to the end of the age.”^(A)
