²⁰ For no one will be justified^[a] in His sight by the works of the law,^(A) because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.^(B)

Sin’s Use of the Law

⁷ What should we say then?^(A) Is the law sin? Absolutely not!^(B) On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law.^(C) For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.^(D)[a]

The Purpose of the Law

¹⁹ Why then was the law given?^(A) It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels^(B) by means of a mediator.^(C)
