Deuteronomy 5:32-6:3
New American Bible (Revised Edition)
32 Be careful, therefore, to do as the Lord, your God, has commanded you, not turning aside to the right or to the left, 33 but following exactly the way that the Lord, your God, commanded you that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to possess.(A)
Chapter 6
1 This then is the commandment, the statutes and the ordinances,(B) which the Lord, your God, has commanded that you be taught to observe in the land you are about to cross into to possess, 2 so that you, that is, you, your child, and your grandchild, may fear the Lord, your God, by keeping, as long as you live, all his statutes and commandments(C) which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life. 3 Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly; for the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.(D)
The Great Commandment.[a]
Footnotes
- 6:4–5 This passage, an expansion of the first commandment (5:6–10), contains the basic principle of the whole Mosaic law, the keynote of the Book of Deuteronomy: since the Lord alone is God, Israel must love him with an undivided heart. Jesus cited these words as “the greatest and the first commandment,” embracing in itself the whole law of God (Mt 22:37–38; Mk 12:29–30; Lk 10:27).
2 Samuel 7:12-16
New American Bible (Revised Edition)
12 (A)when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He it is[a] who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. If he does wrong, I will reprove him with a human rod and with human punishments;(B) 15 but I will not withdraw my favor from him as I withdrew it from Saul who was before you.(C) 16 Your house and your kingdom are firm forever before me; your throne shall be firmly established forever.[b](D)

New American Bible (Revised Edition)
II
11 The Lord swore an oath to David in truth,
he will never turn back from it:(A)
“Your own offspring(B) I will set upon your throne.
12 If your sons observe my covenant,
and my decrees I shall teach them,
Their sons, in turn,
shall sit forever on your throne.”
13 Yes, the Lord has chosen Zion,
desired it for a dwelling:
14 “This is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, for I desire it.
15 I will bless Zion with provisions;
its poor I will fill with bread.
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation;
its devout shall shout for joy.(C)
17 There I will make a horn sprout for David;[a](D)
I will set a lamp for my anointed.
18 His foes I will clothe with shame,
but on him his crown shall shine.”
