¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. ^19 (A)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰ Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

²¹ “Not everyone who says to Me, ^(C)‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who ^(D)does the will of My Father in heaven. ²² Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we ^(E)not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ ²³ And ^(F)then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; ^(G)depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

²⁴ “Therefore ^(I)whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: ²⁵ and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

²⁶ “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: ²⁷ and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit^(A)

^43 (B)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. ⁴⁴ For ^(C)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. ^45 (D)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil ^[a]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out ^(E)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

^46 (G)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? ^47 (H)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: ⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was ^[b]founded on the rock. ⁴⁹ But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it ^[c]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
