داؤد کا اسرائیلیوں کے گننے کا گناہ
21 شیطان بنی اسرائیلیوں کے خلاف تھا۔ اس نے داؤد کو بنی اسرائیلیوں کی گنتی کرنے کی ہمت بندھا ئی۔ 2 اس لئے داؤد نے یوآب سے اور لوگوں کے قائدین سے کہا ، “جاؤ اور سبھی بنی اسرائیلیوں کی گنتی کرو۔” ملک میں ہر ایک کی گنتی کرو۔ بیر سبع سے لیکر دان شہر تک۔ پھر مجھے کہو تاکہ مجھے معلوم ہوگا کہ وہاں کتنے لوگ ہیں۔”
3 لیکن یوآب نے جواب دیا ، “خدا وند اپنے لوگوں کو سو گنا بڑھا ئے ! میرے خدا وند اور بادشاہ کیا وہ سارے میرے خدا وند کے خادم نہیں ہیں ؟ میرا خدا وند یہ کیوں کرنا چاہتا ہے ؟ کیا وہ اسرائیل کو قصوروار نہیں بنا رہا ہے ؟”
4 لیکن بادشاہ داؤد کی ضد تھی۔ یوآب کو وہ کرنا پڑا جو بادشاہ نے کہا اس لئے یوآب گیا اور تمام ملک اسرائیل میں گنتی کرتا ہوا گھو متا رہا پھر یوآب یروشلم واپس ہوا 5 داؤد کو بتایا کہ کتنے آدمی تھے اِسرائیل میں گیارہ لا کھ مرد تھے جو تلوار کا استعمال کر سکتے تھے۔ اور تلوار کا استعمال کرنے والے ۰۰۰,۴۷۰ مرد یہوداہ میں تھے۔ 6 یوآب نے لاوی اور بنیمین کے قبیلوں کی گنتی نہیں کی کیوں کہ وہ بادشاہ داؤد کے حکموں کو پسند نہیں کرتا تھا۔ 7 خدا کی نظر میں داؤد نے یہ برا کام کیا تھا اس لئے خدا نے اسرائیل کو سزا دی۔
خدا کا اِسرائیل کو سزا دینا
8 تب داؤد نے خدا سے کہا، “میں نے ان کاموں کو کر کے ایک بڑا گناہ کیا ہے۔ اب میں دعا کرتا ہوں کہ تو مجھے ، اپنے خادم کے گناہوں کو معاف کر دے کیوں کہ میں بہت بے وقوف ہو چکا ہوں۔”‘
9-10 جاد داؤد کا سیر تھا۔ خدا وند نے جاد سے کہا ، “جاؤ اور داؤد سے کہو :’ خدا وند جو کہتا ہے وہ یہ ہے : میں تم کو تین اختیار دے رہا ہوں تمہیں اس میں سے ایک کو چُننا ہوگا۔ اور میں تم سے ویسا ہی کروں گا۔”
11-12 تب جاد داؤد کے پاس گیا۔ اور کہا ، “خدا وند کہتا ہے ، ’ اپنا اختیار چنو : یا تو ملک کو تین سال قحط سالی کا سامنا کرنا ہوگا۔ یا پھر تین مہینے تک تمہارے دُشمن تلوار لیکر تمہارا پیچھا کریں گے یا تین دن تک تمہارے ملک میں اسرائیل میں بھیانک وباء پھیلے گی۔ اور خدا وند کا فرشتہ لوگوں کو تباہ کرتا ہوا سارے ملک میں جائے گا۔‘ اس لئے اب تم فیصلہ کرو کہ مجھے کیا جواب دینا چاہئے جس نے مجھے بھیجا ہے۔
13 داؤد نے جواب دیا ، “میں بہت بڑی مصیبت میں ہوں لیکن میں خدا وند سے سزاوار ہونا چاہوں گا بجائے انسان سے سزا وار ہونے کے کیوں کہ خدا وند بہت رحم دل ہے۔”
14 خدا وند نے اسرائیل میں بھیانک وباء بھیجی اور ستّر ہزار لوگ مر گئے۔ 15 اور خدا نے یروشلم کو تباہ کر نے کے لئے ایک فرشتہ بھیجا۔ لیکن جب فرشتے نے ایسا کرنا شروع کیا تو خدا وند نے دیکھا اور وہ آفت سے رنجیدہ ہوا۔ اس نے تباہ کرنے والے فرشتہ کو حکم دیا ، “یہ کافی ہے اپنا ہاتھ نیچے کرو !” خدا وند کا فرشتہ اس وقت یبوسی اروناہ کی کھلیان کے نزدیک کھڑا تھا۔
16 داؤد نے نظر اٹھا کر دیکھا کہ خدا وند کا فرشتہ آسمان اور زمین کے بیچ کھڑا ہے۔ فرشتہ نے اپنی تلوار یروشلم پر کھینچ رکھی تھی۔ تب داؤداور بزر گ جو کہ ٹا ٹ پہنے ہوئے تھے اوندھے منھ زمین پر گر پڑے۔ 17 داؤد نے خدا سے کہا ، “کیا وہ میں نہیں تھا جس نے لوگوں کو گننے کا حکم دیا تھا ؟ اس لئے وہ میں ہی ہوں جس نے گناہ اور غلطی کی یہ لوگ جو میرے لئے بھیڑ جیسے ہیں انہوں نے کیا کیا ہے ؟ خدا وند میرے خدا مجھے اور میرے خاندان کو سزا دے لیکن اس بھیانک وبا: کو روک دے جو تیرے آدمیوں کے بیچ ہے۔”
18 تب خدا وند کے فرشتہ نے جاد سے کہا ، “داؤد سے کہو کہ وہ خدا وند کے لئے یبوسی اروناہ کی کھلیان پر ایک قربان گاہ بنائے۔” 19 اور اس طرح سے داؤد وہاں گیا جیسا کہ جاد نے خدا وند کے نام پر اسے کہا تھا۔
20 جب اروناہ گیہوں مَل رہا تھا تو اس نے پلٹ کر فرشتہ کو دیکھا اروناہ کے چاروں لڑ کے چھپنے کے لئے بھاگ گئے۔ 21 داؤد اروناہ کے پاس گیا اور جب اروناہ نے داؤد کو دیکھا تو وہ کھلیان سے گیا اور داؤد کے سامنے اپنا سر جھکایا۔
22 داؤد نے اروناہ سے کہا ، “تم اپنی کھلیان مجھے پوری قیمت پر دے دو۔ تب میں وہاں خدا وند کے لئے قربان گاہ بنا سکتا ہوں تا کہ لوگوں کے بیچ وباء رک جائے گی۔”
23 اروناہ داؤد سے کہا ، “اسے لے لیجئے میرے آقا اور بادشاہ۔ آپ جو چاہیں کر سکتے ہیں۔ دیکھئے میں جلانے کی قربانی کے لئے جانور اور جلاون کے طور پر فرش کی لکڑی کے تختوں اور اناج کے نذرانے کے لئے گیہوں بھی دونگا۔”
24 لیکن بادشاہ داؤد نے اروناہ کو جواب دیا ، “نہیں ! میں تم کو پوری قیمت دونگا۔ میں کو ئی بھی چیز جو تمہاری ہے نذر پیش نہیں کروں گا یا ایسی کو ئی چیز کی جلانے کی قربانی پیش نہیں کروں گا۔ جس کی میں نے کوئی قیمت ادا نہیں کی۔”
25 اس لئے داؤد نے اروناہ کو اس جگہ کے لئے پندرہ پاؤنڈ سونا ادا کیا۔ 26 اور اس طرح سے داؤد نے خدا وند کے لئے اس جگہ پر ایک قربان گاہ بنائی۔ اس نے جلانے کا نذرانہ اور ہمدردی کا نذرانہ پیش کیا۔ تب داؤد نے خدا وند سے یہ دعا کی اور خدا وند نے آسمان سے جلا نے کے نذرانے کی قربان گاہ کے اوپر آ گ بھیج کر جواب دیا۔ 27 تب خدا وند نے فرشتہ کو حکم دیا کہ وہ اپنی تلوار کو نیام میں رکھ دے۔
28 داؤد نے دیکھا کہ خدا نے یبوسی اروناہ کی کھلیان پر اُسے جواب دیا۔ اور اس لئے اس نے اور زیادہ قربانیاں پیش کیں۔ 29 خدا وند کا مقدس خیمہ جسے کہ موسیٰ نے ریگستان میں بنایا تھا اور جلانے کے نذرانے کی قربان گاہ اس وقت جبعون کے اونچے مقام پر تھا۔ 30 لیکن داؤد وہاں خدا وند سے باتیں کر نے کے لئے نہیں جا سکا۔ کیوں کہ وہ خدا وند کے فرشتے کی تلوار سے ڈرا ہوا تھا۔

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
