²² And he said, “The Son of Man^(A) must suffer many things^(B) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(C) and he must be killed^(D) and on the third day^(E) be raised to life.”^(F)

²³ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^{(G) 24} For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.^{(H) 25} What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? ²⁶ Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them^(I) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.^(J)

²⁷ “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time^(A)

³¹ Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,^(B) and everything that is written by the prophets^(C) about the Son of Man^(D) will be fulfilled. ³² He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.^(E) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; ³³ they will flog him^(F) and kill him.^(G) On the third day^(H) he will rise again.”^(I)

²³ Jesus replied, “The hour^(A) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.^{(B) 24} Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,^(C) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. ²⁵ Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it^(D) for eternal life.^{(E) 26} Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.^(F) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled,^(G) and what shall I say? ‘Father,^(H) save me from this hour’?^(I) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,^(J) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” ²⁹ The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

³⁰ Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,^(K) not mine. ³¹ Now is the time for judgment on this world;^(L) now the prince of this world^(M) will be driven out. ³² And I, when I am lifted up^[a] from the earth,^(N) will draw all people to myself.”^{(O) 33} He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.^(P)
