¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”^(A)

¹⁷ Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,^(B) but by my Father in heaven.^{(C) 18} And I tell you that you are Peter,^[a](D) and on this rock I will build my church,^(E) and the gates of Hades^[b] will not overcome it.

¹² Be joyful in hope,^(A) patient in affliction,^(B) faithful in prayer.^{(C) 13} Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.^(D) Practice hospitality.^(E)

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you;^(F) bless and do not curse. ¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.^{(G) 16} Live in harmony with one another.^(H) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.^[a] Do not be conceited.^(I)

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil.^(J) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.^{(K) 18} If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.^{(L) 19} Do not take revenge,^(M) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[b](N) says the Lord. ²⁰ On the contrary:

²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

²² And God placed all things under his feet^(A) and appointed him to be head^(B) over everything for the church,

²³ which is his body,^(A) the fullness of him^(B) who fills everything in every way.^(C)

¹⁹ Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,^(A) but fellow citizens^(B) with God’s people and also members of his household,^{(C) 20} built^(D) on the foundation^(E) of the apostles and prophets,^(F) with Christ Jesus himself^(G) as the chief cornerstone.^{(H) 21} In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple^(I) in the Lord. ²² And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.^(J)

¹⁴ And over all these virtues put on love,^(A) which binds them all together in perfect unity.^(B)

¹⁵ Let the peace of Christ^(A) rule in your hearts, since as members of one body^(B) you were called to peace.^(C) And be thankful.
