16 You see, if you say a blessing in the spirit, how can someone who isn’t one of the inner circle say the “Amen” to your prayer? They won’t know what you’re talking about! 17 You may well be giving thanks in fine style, but the other person isn’t being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[a] say “Amen”(A) to your thanksgiving,(B) since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.(C)
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
