12 Then after the earthquake a fire, but Yahweh was not in the fire; and after the fire (A)a sound of a thin [a]gentle whisper. 13 Now it happened that when Elijah heard it, (B)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, (C)a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 Then he said, “(D)I have been very zealous for Yahweh, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, pulled down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

12 After the earthquake came a fire,(A) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.(B) 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face(C) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(D) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
