5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans: 6 [a]“Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans. 7 Quite some time ago a letter was sent to Onias[b] the high priest from Arius your king, stating that you are indeed our brothers, as the attached copy shows.

- 1 Maccabees 12:6 The author transcribes the letter inserting a few teachings in it; indirectly, he reveals to us that the collection of the Scriptures (v. 9) is constituted.
- 1 Maccabees 12:7 The persons seem to be Onias I, high priest (323–290 B.C.), and Arius I, king of Sparta (309–265 B.C.), whose tasks coincided during the period from 309–300 B.C.
