A Eulogy of the Romans

8 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were very strong and were well-disposed toward all who made an alliance with them, that they pledged friendship to those who came to them,^(A)

Bacchides Returns to Judea

9 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah a second time, and with them the right wing of the army.^(A)

² When King Demetrius heard of it, he assembled a very large army and marched out to meet him in battle.^(A)

⁵⁰ He pressed the battle strongly until the sun set, and on that day Demetrius fell.

³⁴ The Romans also sent them a letter, which read thus:

“Quintus Memmius and Titus Manius, envoys of the Romans, to the people of the Jews, greetings.^(A)

¹⁴ And the nations throughout Judea, who had fled before^[a] Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that the misfortunes and calamities of the Jews would mean prosperity for themselves.
