Since you have [already] tasted the goodness and kindness of the Lord.(A)

Come to Him [then, to that] Living Stone which men [a]tried and threw away, but which is chosen [and] precious in God’s sight.(B)

[Come] and, like living stones, be yourselves built [into] a spiritual house, for a holy (dedicated, consecrated) priesthood, to offer up [those] spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ.

For thus it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen ([b]honored), precious chief Cornerstone, and he who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] shall never be [c]disappointed or put to shame.(C)

To you then who believe (who adhere to, trust in, and rely on Him) is the preciousness; but for those who disbelieve [it is true], The [very] Stone which the builders rejected has become the main Cornerstone,(D)

And, A Stone that will cause stumbling and a Rock that will give [men] offense; they stumble because they disobey and disbelieve [God’s] Word, as those [who reject Him] were destined (appointed) to do.

now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(A)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(B)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(C) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(D) into a spiritual house[a](E) to be a holy priesthood,(F) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(G) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(H)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[b](I)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(J)

“The stone the builders rejected(K)
    has become the cornerstone,”[c](L)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[d](M)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(N)
