Because it is contained in [a]scripture,

[b]Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, [c]precious:
And he that believeth on [d]him shall not be put to shame.

[e]For you therefore that believe is the [f]preciousness: but for such as disbelieve,

[g]The stone which the builders rejected,
The same was made the head of the corner;

and,

[h]A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence;

[i]for they [j]stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(A)
and the one who trusts in him
    will never be put to shame.”[a](B)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(C)

“The stone the builders rejected(D)
    has become the cornerstone,”[b](E)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
    and a rock that makes them fall.”[c](F)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(G)
