8 and

A stone to stumble over,
and a rock to trip over.[a](A)

They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined(B) for this.

9 But you are a chosen race,[b][c](C) a royal priesthood,[d](D) a holy nation,[e](E) a people for his possession,[f](F) so that you may proclaim the praises[g][h](G) of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.(H) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy,(I) but now you have received mercy.

8 and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
    and a rock that makes them fall.”[a](A)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(B)

9 But you are a chosen people,(C) a royal priesthood,(D) a holy nation,(E) God’s special possession,(F) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(G) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(H) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
