15 but set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts, being ready always for a defense to everyone asking you a reason for the hope in you, 16 but with gentleness and fear[a], having a good conscience in order that in what you are spoken-against[b], the ones maligning your good conduct in Christ may be put-to-shame. 17 For it is better to be suffering while doing-good, if the will of God should [so] will it, than while doing-evil.

New International Version
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(A) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(B) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(C) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(D) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(E) to suffer for doing good(F) than for doing evil.
