15 but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you,(A) 16 yet do it with gentleness and respect. Maintain a good conscience so that, when you are maligned,[a] those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.(B) 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil.

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(A) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(B) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(C) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(D) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(E) to suffer for doing good(F) than for doing evil.
