20 But Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid. You have done all of this wickedness, but you have not turned away from following the Lord. Serve the Lord with your whole heart. 21 Do not turn aside after useless things that cannot be to your profit, nor can they deliver you, for they are useless. 22 The Lord will not abandon you because of his great name,[a] for the Lord desired to make you his people.

  1. 1 Samuel 12:22 Because of his great name: the people of Israel shared a significant place in being chosen by God. Often in the Old Testament, the Lord is called upon to save his people from their sin, and although he will punish them, he will never abandon them.
