11 Samuel said, ‘What have you done?’ Saul replied, ‘When I saw that the people were slipping away from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines were mustering at Michmash, 12 I said, “Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favour of the Lord”; so I forced myself, and offered the burnt-offering.’ 13 Samuel said to Saul, ‘You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which he commanded you. The Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel for ever,

11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel.
Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,(A) 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,(B) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.(C)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
13 “You have done a foolish thing,(D)” Samuel said. “You have not kept(E) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.(F)
