10 The Philistine would say, “I defy the ranks of Israel today! Give me a man, and we will fight each other!” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they lost their courage and were terrified.
[a] 12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite from Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse. Jesse had eight sons. In the days of Saul, Jesse was a very old man.

10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy(A) the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.(B)” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.
12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite(C) named Jesse,(D) who was from Bethlehem(E) in Judah. Jesse had eight(F) sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old.
