And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the [a]first day of the month, and I should sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the fields unto the third day at even.

If thy father make mention of me, then say, David asked leave of me, that he might go to Bethlehem to his own city: for there is a [b]yearly sacrifice for all that family.

And if he say thus, It is well, thy servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, be sure that wickedness is concluded of him.

So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast,(A) and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide(B) in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow. If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission(C) to hurry to Bethlehem,(D) his hometown, because an annual(E) sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’ If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. But if he loses his temper,(F) you can be sure that he is determined(G) to harm me.
