David’s men said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly. Afterward, David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”

The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke(A) of when he said[a] to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’”(B) Then David crept up unnoticed and cut(C) off a corner of Saul’s robe.

Afterward, David was conscience-stricken(D) for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed,(E) or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.”
