1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah’s Prayer

2 Then Hannah prayed and said:^(A)

“My heart rejoices^(B) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn^[a]^(C) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts^(D) over my enemies,^(E)
for I delight in your deliverance.

²“There is no one holy^(F) like^(G) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock^(H) like our God.

³“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,^(I)
for the Lord is a God who knows,^(J)
and by him deeds^(K) are weighed.^(L)

⁴“The bows of the warriors are broken,^(M)
    but those who stumbled are armed with strength.^(N)
⁵Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
    but those who were hungry^(O) are hungry no more.
She who was barren^(P) has borne seven children,
    but she who has had many sons pines away.

⁶“The Lord brings death and makes alive;^(Q)
    he brings down to the grave and raises up.^(R)
⁷The Lord sends poverty and wealth;^(S)
    he humbles and he exalts.^(T)
⁸He raises^(U) the poor^(V) from the dust^(W)
    and lifts the needy^(X) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
    and has them inherit a throne of honor.^(Y)

“For the foundations^(Z) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
⁹He will guard the feet^(AA) of his faithful servants,^(AB)
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.^(AC)

“It is not by strength^(AD) that one prevails;
¹⁰ those who oppose the Lord will be broken.^(AE)
The Most High will thunder^(AF) from heaven;
the Lord will judge^(AG) the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength^(AH) to his king
and exalt the horn^(AI) of his anointed.”

Genesis 21:1-21

The Birth of Isaac

21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah^(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.^(B) ²Sarah became pregnant and bore a son^(C) to Abraham in his old age,^(D) at the very time God had promised him.^(E) ³Abraham gave the name Isaac^[a]^(F) to the son Sarah bore him. ⁴When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,^(G) as God commanded him. ⁵Abraham was a hundred years old^(H) when his son Isaac was born to him.

⁶Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,^(I) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” ⁷And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”^(J)

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

⁸The child grew and was weaned,^(K) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. ⁹But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham^(L) was mocking,^(M) ¹⁰and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman^(N) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”^(O)

¹¹The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.^(P) ¹²But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[b] will be reckoned.^(Q) ¹³I will make the son of the slave into a nation^(R) also, because he is your offspring.”

¹⁴Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.^(S) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.^(T)

¹⁵When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. ¹⁶Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she^[c] began to sob.^(U)

¹⁷God heard the boy crying,^(V) and the angel of God^(W) called to Hagar from heaven^(X) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;^(Y) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. ¹⁸Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.^(Z)”

¹⁹Then God opened her eyes^(AA) and she saw a well of water.^(AB) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

²⁰God was with the boy^(AC) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. ²¹While he was living in the Desert of Paran,^(AD) his mother got a wife for him^(AE) from Egypt.

Hagar and Sarah

²¹Tell me, you who want to be under the law,^(A) are you not aware of what the law says? ²²For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman^(B) and the other by the free woman.^(C) ²³His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh,^(D) but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.^(E)

²⁴These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. ²⁵Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. ²⁶But the Jerusalem that is above^(F) is free, and she is our mother. ²⁷For it is written:

“Be glad, barren woman,
    you who never bore a child;
shout for joy and cry aloud,
    you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolate woman
    than of her who has a husband.”^[a]^(G)

²⁸Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.^(H) ²⁹At that time the son born according to the flesh^(I) persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit.^(J) It is the same now. ³⁰But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”^[b]^(K) ³¹Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman,^(L) but of the free woman.^(M)
