When Israel's leaders said, ‘Choose a king who will lead us,’ Samuel was not happy. So he prayed to the Lord. The Lord said to Samuel, ‘Listen to everything that the people are saying to you. I myself should be their king. So it is not you that they refuse to accept. It is me that they do not accept to be their king. They are doing what they have always done. Since I brought them out of Egypt they have continued to turn away from me. They have chosen to serve other gods. Now they are turning against you in the same way.

But when they said, “Give us a king(A) to lead us,” this displeased(B) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen(C) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(D) but they have rejected me as their king.(E) As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(F) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
