likewise also (A)that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 (B)but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly (C)with all submissiveness. 12 (D)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (E)For Adam was formed first, (F)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (G)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (H)childbearing—if they continue in (I)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is (J)trustworthy: If anyone aspires to (K)the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore (L)an overseer[a] must be above reproach, (M)the husband of one wife,[b] (N)sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, (O)hospitable, (P)able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but (Q)gentle, not quarrelsome, (R)not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity (S)keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for (T)God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may (U)become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by (V)outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into (W)a snare of the devil.

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(A) 10 but with good deeds,(B) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(C) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(D) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(E) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(F) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(G) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(H) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(I) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(J) faithful to his wife,(K) temperate,(L) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(M) able to teach,(N) not given to drunkenness,(O) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(P) not a lover of money.(Q) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[d] respect.(R) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(S) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(T) and fall under the same judgment(U) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(V) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(W)

Footnotes

  2. 1 Timothy 2:12 Or over her husband

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
