7 Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Deacons in like manner must be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(A) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(B)
8 In the same way, deacons[a](C) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(D) and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(E)
