If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to respect their own family and to make some repayment to those who brought them up. This, you see, pleases God. A real widow is one who, left by herself, has set her hope on God, and continues in prayer and supplication night and day; but a self-indulgent woman is dead even while she’s alive.

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(A) for this is pleasing to God.(B) The widow who is really in need(C) and left all alone puts her hope in God(D) and continues night and day to pray(E) and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(F)
