⁵ Therefore judge nothing^(A) before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.^(B) He will bring to light^(C) what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.^(D)

²⁴ Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom^(A) to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.^{(B) 25} For he must reign^(C) until he has put all his enemies under his feet.^{(D) 26} The last enemy to be destroyed is death.^{(E) 27} For he “has put everything under his feet.”^[a](F) Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.^{(G) 28} When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him,^(H) so that God may be all in all.^(I)

The Resurrection Body

³⁵ But someone will ask,^(A) “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”^{(B) 36} How foolish!^(C) What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.^{(D) 37} When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. ³⁸ But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.^{(E) 39} Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. ⁴⁰ There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. ⁴¹ The sun has one kind of splendor,^(F) the moon another and the stars another;^(G) and star differs from star in splendor.

⁴² So will it be^(H) with the resurrection of the dead.^(I) The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;^{(J) 43} it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory;^(K) it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; ⁴⁴ it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.^(L)

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. ⁴⁵ So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”^[a];^(M) the last Adam,^(N) a life-giving spirit.^{(O) 46} The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.^{(P) 47} The first man was of the dust of the earth;^(Q) the second man is of heaven.^{(R) 48} As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.^{(S) 49} And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,^(T) so shall we^[b] bear the image of the heavenly man.^(U)

⁵⁰ I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood^(V) cannot inherit the kingdom of God,^(W) nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.^{(X) 51} Listen, I tell you a mystery:^(Y) We will not all sleep,^(Z) but we will all be changed^(AA)— ⁵² in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,^(AB) the dead^(AC) will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. ⁵³ For the perishable^(AD) must clothe itself with the imperishable,^(AE) and the mortal with immortality. ⁵⁴ When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”^[c](AF)

⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin,^(AH) and the power of sin is the law.^{(AI) 57} But thanks be to God!^(AJ) He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.^(AK)

⁵⁸ Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,^(AL) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.^(AM)

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us^(A) for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

²⁰ But our citizenship^(A) is in heaven.^(B) And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,^{(C) 21} who, by the power^(D) that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies^(E) so that they will be like his glorious body.^(F)

⁵ the faith and love that spring from the hope^(A) stored up for you in heaven^(B) and about which you have already heard in the true message^(C) of the gospel

⁴ When Christ, who is your^[a] life,^(A) appears,^(B) then you also will appear with him in glory.^(C)

¹⁴ For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,^(A) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.^{(B) 15} According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(C) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^{(D) 16} For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(E) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(F) and with the trumpet call of God,^(G) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^{(H) 17} After that, we who are still alive and are left^(I) will be caught up together with them in the clouds^(J) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord^(K) forever. ¹⁸ Therefore encourage one another^(L) with these words.

The Day of the Lord

5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates^(A) we do not need to write to you,^{(B) 2} for you know very well that the day of the Lord^(C) will come like a thief in the night.^{(D) 3} While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”^(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,^(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.^(G)

⁴ But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness^(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.^{(I) 5} You are all children of the light^(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶ So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,^(K) but let us be awake^(L) and sober.^{(M) 7} For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.^{(N) 8} But since we belong to the day,^(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,^(P) and the hope of salvation^(Q) as a helmet.^{(R) 9} For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath^(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.^{(T) 10} He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.^{(U) 11} Therefore encourage one another^(V) and build each other up,^(W) just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions

¹² Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard^(X) among you, who care for you in the Lord^(Y) and who admonish you. ¹³ Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.^{(Z) 14} And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle^(AA) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,^(AB) be patient with everyone. ¹⁵ Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,^(AC) but always strive to do what is good for each other^(AD) and for everyone else.

¹⁶ Rejoice always,^{(AE) 17} pray continually,^{(AF) 18} give thanks in all circumstances;^(AG) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

¹⁹ Do not quench the Spirit.^{(AH) 20} Do not treat prophecies^(AI) with contempt ²¹ but test them all;^(AJ) hold on to what is good,^{(AK) 22} reject every kind of evil.

²³ May God himself, the God of peace,^(AL) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul^(AM) and body be kept blameless^(AN) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.^{(AO) 24} The one who calls^(AP) you is faithful,^(AQ) and he will do it.^(AR)

²⁵ Brothers and sisters, pray for us.^{(AS) 26} Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.^{(AT) 27} I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.^(AU)

²⁸ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.^(AV)
