² Now Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of whom two thousand were with Saul in ^(A)Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while a thousand were with Jonathan at ^(B)Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent the rest of the people away, each to his tent.

¹⁷ And they took Absalom and threw him into ^[a]a deep pit in the forest, and ^(A)erected over him a very large pile of stones. And ^(B)all Israel fled, each to his own tent.

¹⁶ When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,

^(B)So all Israel went away to their tents.
