⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, ^(A)“I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

16 The Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since ^(B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? ^(C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, ^(D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

¹⁸ One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skilful in playing, ^(A)a man of valour, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, ^(B)and the Lord is with him.”

²² Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
