¹³ But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today,^(A) for this day the Lord has rescued^(B) Israel.”

⁴⁹ Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

⁵⁰ So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling^(A) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

¹⁴ But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.^(A)

¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood^(A) will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.^(B)

¹¹ But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor,^(C) and then flees to one of these cities, ¹² the killer shall be sent for by the town elders, be brought back from the city, and be handed over to the avenger of blood to die. ¹³ Show no pity.^(D) You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood,^(E) so that it may go well with you.

³² “Why^(A) should he be put to death? What^(B) has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.

⁴ “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”^(A)
