A Heavenly Inheritance

(A)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who (B)according to His abundant mercy (C)has begotten us again to a living hope (D)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance [a]incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, (E)reserved in heaven for you, (F)who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

(G)In this you greatly rejoice, though now (H)for a little while, if need be, (I)you have been [b]grieved by various trials, that (J)the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though (K)it is tested by fire, (L)may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, (M)whom having not [c]seen you love. (N)Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, (O)the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to [d]us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which (P)angels desire to look into.

Living Before God Our Father

13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not (Q)conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 (R)but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, (S)“Be holy, for I am holy.”

17 And if you call on the Father, who (T)without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your [e]stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with [f]corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but (U)with the precious blood of Christ, (V)as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 (W)He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was [g]manifest (X)in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, (Y)who raised Him from the dead and (Z)gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Praise to God for a Living Hope

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!(A) In his great mercy(B) he has given us new birth(C) into a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,(E) and into an inheritance(F) that can never perish, spoil or fade.(G) This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,(H) who through faith are shielded by God’s power(I) until the coming of the salvation(J) that is ready to be revealed(K) in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice,(L) though now for a little while(M) you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.(N) These have come so that the proven genuineness(O) of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire(P)—may result in praise, glory and honor(Q) when Jesus Christ is revealed.(R) Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him(S) and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.(T)

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke(U) of the grace that was to come to you,(V) searched intently and with the greatest care,(W) 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ(X) in them was pointing when he predicted(Y) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,(Z) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you(AA) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(AB) Even angels long to look into these things.

Be Holy

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,(AC) set your hope(AD) on the grace to be brought to you(AE) when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.(AF) 14 As obedient(AG) children, do not conform(AH) to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.(AI) 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(AJ) 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a](AK)

17 Since you call on a Father(AL) who judges each person’s work(AM) impartially,(AN) live out your time as foreigners(AO) here in reverent fear.(AP) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(AQ) from the empty way of life(AR) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(AS) of Christ, a lamb(AT) without blemish or defect.(AU) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(AV) but was revealed in these last times(AW) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(AX) who raised him from the dead(AY) and glorified him,(AZ) and so your faith and hope(BA) are in God.
