But (A)if we walk in the light, (B)as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and (C)the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (D)If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and (E)the truth is not in us. (F)If we confess our sins, he is (G)faithful and just to forgive us our sins and (H)to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, (I)we make him a liar, and (J)his word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, (K)we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (L)He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (M)also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we (N)keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments (O)is a liar, and (P)the truth is not in him, but whoever (Q)keeps his word, in him truly (R)the love of God is perfected. (S)By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he (T)abides in him (U)ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

But if we walk in the light,(A) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[a] sin.(B)

If we claim to be without sin,(C) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.(D) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins(E) and purify us from all unrighteousness.(F) 10 If we claim we have not sinned,(G) we make him out to be a liar(H) and his word is not in us.(I)

My dear children,(J) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(K) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(L) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(M)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

We know(N) that we have come to know him(O) if we keep his commands.(P) Whoever says, “I know him,”(Q) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.(R) But if anyone obeys his word,(S) love for God[b] is truly made complete in them.(T) This is how we know(U) we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.(V)
