Lawless good-for-nothing men[a] gathered around him and conspired[b] against Rehoboam son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was an inexperienced young man[c] and could not resist them. Now you are declaring that you will resist the Lord’s rule through the Davidic dynasty.[d] You have a huge army,[e] and bring with you the gold calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods. But you banished[f] the Lord’s priests, Aaron’s descendants, and the Levites, and appointed your own priests just as the surrounding nations do! Anyone who comes to consecrate himself with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of these fake gods![g]

“And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David’s descendants.(C) You are indeed a vast army and have with you(D) the golden calves(E) that Jeroboam made to be your gods. But didn’t you drive out the priests(F) of the Lord,(G) the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull(H) and seven rams(I) may become a priest of what are not gods.(J)
