Messengers came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army from Edom[a] is marching against you from beyond the Dead Sea.[b] They are already at Hazazon-tamar.” (This was another name for En-gedi.)

Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek the Lord’s help.

It is already in Hazezon Tamar(B)” (that is, En Gedi).(C) Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast(D) for all Judah. The people of Judah(E) came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.
