7 But the Lord would not destroy David’s family because of the agreement he made with David. He had promised to keep a lamp burning for David and his children forever.[a]
8 In Jehoram’s time, Edom broke away from under Judah’s authority. The people of Edom chose their own king. 9 So Jehoram went to Edom with all his commanders and chariots. The Edomite army surrounded Jehoram and his chariot commanders. But Jehoram fought his way out at night.

New International Version
7 Nevertheless, because of the covenant the Lord had made with David,(A) the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David.(B) He had promised to maintain a lamp(C) for him and his descendants forever.
8 In the time of Jehoram, Edom(D) rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. 9 So Jehoram went there with his officers and all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night.
