He did what was right from Adonai’s perspective, but not wholeheartedly.

As soon as he had the kingdom firmly in his control, he put to death the servants of his who had assassinated the king his father. But he did not put their children to death; rather, he acted according to what is written in the Torah, in the scroll of Moshe, as Adonai ordered when he said, “Fathers are not to die for the children, nor are the children to die for the fathers; every person will die for his own sin.”

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.(A) After the kingdom was firmly in his control, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. Yet he did not put their children to death, but acted in accordance with what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses,(B) where the Lord commanded: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children be put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](C)
