Amaziah did what the Lord said was right. But he did not really want to obey the Lord. Amaziah took strong control of the kingdom. Then he put to death the officers who had murdered his father the king. But Amaziah did not put their children to death. He obeyed what was written in the Book of Moses. There the Lord commanded, “Fathers must not be put to death when their children do wrong. And children must not be put to death when their fathers do wrong. Each person must die for his own sins.”[a]

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.(A) After the kingdom was firmly in his control, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. Yet he did not put their children to death, but acted in accordance with what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses,(B) where the Lord commanded: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children be put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](C)
