2 Samuel 12:3-5

³“But the poor man had nothing except ^(A)one little ewe lamb
Which he bought and nourished;
And it grew up together with him and his children.
It would eat of his ^[a]bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom,
And was like a daughter to him.
⁴“Now a traveler came to the rich man,
And he ^[b]was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd,
To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him;
Rather he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”

⁵Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this ^[c]^(B)deserves to die.

³but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

⁴“Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”

⁵David^(A) burned with anger^(B) against the man^(C) and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives,^(D) the man who did this must die!
